Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower National Monument is a striking, geologic wonder that has been steeped in Native American legends. It is  a national park today and a challenge for climbers. The Devils Tower is located in northeast Wyoming, across the state line. The Devil's Tower is a solitary, stump-shaped granite formation that looms 1,267 feet above the tree-lined Belle Fourche River Valley. Devils mountain looks like a tallest building in the country. The Devils Tower WY was once hidden beneath the earth's surface. However, erosion has exposed the soft rock layers and revealed the Tower.

Devils Tower is also known by Bear Lodge Butte. It is made from igneous rock in Crook County. Devils rock rises 386m high above the Belle Fourche River. The base is 265m from the summit. The two-square-mile park that surrounds the tower was designated the nation's first National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. It is surrounded by pine forests, woodlands, as well as grasslands. You will see prairie dogs and deer while you visit the park.

Native American legends have their roots in the mountain's markings. Legend has it that a huge bear carved the grooves in the mountainside to chase several young Indian maidens. Bears Lodge is a sacred place of worship for many American Indians. Devils mountain is known by several tribes from the northern plains, including the Bears Lodge.

Devil's tower is both a sacred place for many Plains Indians, and also a popular location for rock climbing. People visit sacred places to offer religious services, and June is an important month in the Plains religious calendar. June is also a popular month for climbing. In the past, this has caused conflict as some American Indians believe that climbing should not be allowed at the site permanently or during the month. Some climbers feel that this would restrict their access to public lands unfairly. In 1995, the National Park Service established a voluntary climbing stop at Devils Tower. While some climbers continue to do so in June, others have decided to stop doing so to respect religious traditions of others.

Devil's Tower

Wyoming Devils tower measures approximately 1,000 feet in diameter at its base and 275 feet high at the top. This makes it the most challenging rock climbing route in the Black Hills. The Monument's trails are popular with hikers. The base is surrounded by the Tower Trail, which measures 1.25 miles. The Tower Trail is a self-guided hike gives close-up views and amazing views of wildlife and forest. The Red Beds Trail extends for three miles around the devils tower in Wyoming.

Phonolite porphyry is the main ingredient in the Devils rock. Phonolite porphyry, an igneous rock is formed when magma or hot lava cools. The magma that created Devils Tower condensed as it cooled. The majority of columns in Devils Tower are hexagonal (6-sided).

Devils Tower was formed by magma, but it wasn't likely to have been a volcano. Most geologists agree Devils Tower is an "igneous intrusion", a location where magma from Earth’s mantle was able to rise between chunks of sedimentary rocks. The same forces that formed the Rocky Mountains 65 million years ago probably created Devils Tower.
