Deep beneath the green hills of Waikato lies a place that seems almost unreal. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are famous for a dark underground chamber where thousands of tiny blue-green lights shine above visitors like stars in a night sky. The experience is especially memorable because visitors view the glowworms from a quiet boat moving along an underground stream.

Death Valley Sailing Stones

On the flat floor of Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, rocks appear to have travelled across the desert by themselves. Some leave long, winding trails behind them, while nearby stones remain exactly where they were. For decades, nobody could watch the rocks move, which made the place one of the strangest natural mysteries in the American West.

The Willamette Meteorite

The Willamette meteorite, referred to as Tomanowos or "Spirit Power" by the Clackamas Chinook people, is the largest space rock found in North America and one of the biggest iron meteorites in the world. It weighs about 15.5 tons (14 metric tonnes), which is equal to roughly 31,000 pounds or 14,150 kilograms. This large interstellar object is approximately 10 feet in length, 6.5 feet in width, and 4.25 feet in height. Its composition includes over 91% iron, 7.6% nickel, and small amounts of cobalt, gallium, germanium, and iridium. It is believed to be a fragment of the metallic core of a differentiated planetesimal that formed in the early stages of the solar system's development.

Devil’s Kettle Waterfall: Minnesota’s Mysterious Vanishing Waterfall

In the deep part of the forest in the U.S. state of Minnesota, there lies one of the most fascinating natural mysteries known—Devil’s Kettle Waterfall. The unusual waterfall is located in Judge C.R. Magney State Park, near the town of Grand Marais in northeastern Minnesota. Unlike ordinary waterfalls, Devil’s Kettle divides into two streams: one continues down the valley as usual, while the other falls into a large circular hole called the Devil’s Kettle and vanishes without a trace.

Witches' Broom: The Mysterious Tree Growth

La Rinconada Peru: The Highest Permanent Settlement in the World

Imagine living in a place where every breath feels like a struggle, where the temperature rarely rises above freezing, and where the air holds only half the oxygen found at sea level. Welcome to La Rinconada, Peru. Perched at a staggering 5,100 metres (16,732 feet) above sea level in the majestic Peruvian Andes, this remote enclave holds the official Guinness World Records title for the highest permanent human settlement on Earth. 

Yet, nobody comes to La Rinconada for the alpine views or the crisp mountain air. They come for one thing only: gold. Tucked precariously beneath the shadow of Mount Ananea’s glacier, affectionately called "La Bella Durmiente" (The Sleeping Beauty), La Rinconada is a city built entirely on the modern gold rush. It is a place of dizzying paradoxes—a settlement frozen in time, yet hyper-connected to the volatile swings of global commodity markets.

La Rinconada, Peru, sits at about 5,100 metres above sea level in the remote Andes and is famous for its extreme altitude and gold-mining economy.

Bailong Elevator – Zhangjiajie China Elevator

One of the most extraordinary pieces of engineering in a natural landscape, the Bailong Elevator in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, China, dramatically ascends a towering quartzite cliff. The elevator is also called the Hundred Dragons Elevator. It’s a huge glass elevator that takes visitors vertically through the stunning mountains of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.

Guinness World Records officially recognises the Bailong Elevator as the highest outdoor lift in the world, at 326 metres (1,070 feet). It combines modern engineering with one of the most dramatic natural environments in China, and is a remarkable way to experience the famous sandstone peaks of Zhangjiajie.

House on the Rock in Wisconsin is one of the strangest architectural attractions in the United States. Perched on a natural chimney of rock near Spring Green, Wisconsin, this extraordinary complex began as a private retreat and gradually grew into a substantial collection of unusual rooms, galleries, mechanical displays, gardens and curiosities.

Alpine Ibex Goats on Dam

Alpine ibex goats have an incredible ability to climb over rugged, mountainous terrain. Occasionally, they even defy the law of gravity, in which they climb the vertical wall of a 50-metre-high dam. It is the Cingino dam, located in the Gran Paradiso National Park, a former royal hunting ground located in the Italian valley of Aosta. These mountain goats are climbing this vertical dam wall without any fear of falling.

Monte Kali: Mountains of Salt

Monte Kali: The 250-meter heigh man-made mountain, which emerged from the table salt produced in the world's largest potash mine, is so harmful to the environment, although it attracts a lot of attention from the public. This unusual mountain in the town of Heringer, Germany, Monte Kali is made up of sodium chloride, or table salt, a byproduct of potash.

This mining has been an industry in this region for over 100 years. It started with the opening of the potash business in 1903, and today it has become the world's largest Kali mine with its field of operation. Potash mineral is mixed with potash and sodium chloride between 20 and 35 percent potassium. For every ton of potash excavated, several tons of sodium chloride "salt" are produced.

Abraham Lake, Alberta, is an artificial lake created in 1972 during the construction of a Bighorn Dam on the North Saskatchewan River in western Alberta, in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The area is about 54 square kilometres, and the length is 32 km. The reservoir was named after Silas Abraham, a resident of the Saskatchewan valley in the nineteenth century.

Venezuelan Poodle Moth

The Venezuelan Poodle Moth is one of the strangest-looking moths ever photographed. It looks more like a tiny furry animal than an insect due to its thick, fluffy appearance, pale body and unusual facial features. There is an interesting story behind this famous picture, though. The picture is authentic, but the insect has not been identified to species level. What scientists do know about it is based mostly on a photograph taken in Venezuela in 2009.
