Mount Roraima – Gran Sabana, Venezuela

Mount Roraima is a beautiful flat table mountain encircled by towering cliffs that float in the sky on the plains of the Gran Sabana (Great Savannah), which encompasses a considerable part of south-eastern Venezuela. The mountain is the highest in South America's Pacaraima series of tepuis. This is one-of-a-kind table-top mountain is covered in unique structures, creatures, and plants found nowhere else on the planet.

Tepui Venezuela

Mount Roraima is the highest of the Pacaraima series of tepui plateaus, located in Venezuela's Canaima National Park. Mount Roraima is 9 miles (14 kilometers) long and stands at the height of 9222 feet (2810 metres), with cliffs rising to 1300 feet (400 meters) on each side of the plateau. Roraima's top is mostly sandstone with little flora.

Roraima Venezuela is one of the most beautiful countries in South America; thus, it is terrible that political and economic troubles beset it. Mount Roraima and Angel Falls are two of the few places in the country where explorers from all over the world still flock—hiking atop mt Roraima, which is bordered by three countries: Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. RORAIMA — In Pemon, the word 'Roroi-ma' means 'large blue-green.' This peak is the tallest of the several table mountains that dot Gran Sabana's grasslands. Because species have evolved in perfect isolation, each of the tepuis Venezuela has its fauna and vegetation. The unique geological formations, quarts fields that resemble a diamond-encrusted magical fairyland, insect-eating plants, and numerous high waterfalls give the area an insane feel that has inspired writers and filmmakers ever since exploration. Monte Roraima is absolutely a lost world, with only a few daring hikers and explorers venturing there these days.

Mount Roraima Facts

Mount Roraima, Venezuela/Brazil/Guyana — Mount Roraima is located on the Venezuelan-Guyanan-Brazilian border, with over 85 percent of the mountain falling within Venezuelan territory. While Guyana's tallest landform is the tepui (tabletop mountain), Brazil and Venezuela have higher peaks.

The mountain receives substantial rainfall year-round, which, combined with the plateau's level surface, causes random waterfalls to appear at different points over the hill.

Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall, is situated 130 miles away on the same tabletop mountain and is part of the same national forest.

Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer, originally described the formation in 1596 after visiting Guyana in quest of the legendary golden city of El Dorado. Still, it was unable to climb it since no practical way to the peak was known at the time.

Everard Thurn walked up a forested trail to conquer Mt. Roraima, the world's first significant tepui, in 1884. This track is the only 'easy' way up on the Venezuelan side, following a natural staircase-like route. Other routes exist, but they are exceedingly complicated and necessitate specialized rock climbing knowledge.

The top is 31 square kilometers in size and is generally shrouded in fog. Black cliffs, gorges, wildflower gardens, and a multitude of pools can be found here.

The mountain has long held a unique meaning for the Pemon Indians, and it is essential to numerous legends and myths that have been passed down through the decades. They see Roraima as the stump of a massive tree that once contained all the fruits and vegetables of the earth.

In Pemon's native language, Roroi means "blue-green", and ma means "great."

Mount Roraima and the other tabletop mountains in Canaima National Park are the Oldest existing geological formations, dating back two billion years to the Early cretaceous Era.

Mount Roraima Venezuela

Tepuy — Sir Everard I.M. Thurn was the first person to climb this tepuy in 1884. This mountain also served as the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic novel The Lost World, published in 1912. He imagined cave dwellers and prehistoric animals running wild atop the peak. Although far-fetched, the concept is sound: scientists regard the Tepuys as "islands in time" because species have evolved in complete isolation on top of them over millennia.

Mount Roraima Animals

There are hardly any animals on Mount Roraima since the environment is extremely harsh and there is almost no food. Coatis exist in a limited population that is rarely seen. There are many different insect species, almost all of which are endemic, meaning they can only be found in Roraima and nowhere else on the earth. There are black butterflies, black beetles, black crickets, and various types of little water/dwelling bugs here, and everything is dark and black.
