Lake in Montana with colored rocks
Lake McDonald is the largest lakes of the Glacier National Park, with a surface area of 27.6 square kilometers. It is also the longest, exceeding 15 km in length, and also the deepest lake with a depth of 141 meters. Not surprisingly, lake Mcdonald glacier is considered one of the most beautiful of the US National Parks.
Lake Mcdonald Pebbles
The colored stones of Lake McDonald are entirely the credit of the planet. The color of the pebbles is due to the iron content in sedimentary rocks and the degree of its oxidation. So, for example, where iron was in close contact with air, red colors prevail there. But green colors are typical for stones formed at great depths, where oxygen is very limited.

Initially, there were rocks here that were formed for millions of years and, depending on conditions, acquired those very amazing colors. Subsequently, during the Ice Age, these rocks were ground into small pebbles by giant ice blocks. Streams of melt water brought colored stones into the valley, which was filled with glacial runoffs.
Another feature of the lake is its indescribable purity, which puts it on a par with such clean bodies of water as, for example, The Verzasca River in Switzerland. The purity of the water in Lake McDonald is due to its temperature, which never rises above +10 degrees Celsius. Such conditions do not allow plankton to reproduce and survive here, and hence the transparency of the water. The bottom here can be seen at a depth of 8-10 meters, and sometimes deeper.

There are many fish species in Lake McDonald, especially trout and salmon. This lake is surrounded by dense coniferous forests, dominated by fir, spruce and larch. There are also many animals in the area. Moose, deer and bears are found here. For tourists around the lake there are 15 hiking trails of varying length and difficulty. Infrastructure for tourists can be found on the lake shore. These are hotels, cafes and canteens, as well as boat rentals.
The most distinctive and prominent feature of McDonald's Lake is the presence of colored rocks and pebbles of different colors. Here, you can see pebbles ranging from crimson, brown, green to blue, yellow, purple ... This makes the scenery of this lake always fanciful, as shown in pictures.
