The Swiss mountains are famous all over the world, but the rivers of this country are no less remarkable. One of these rivers, in the heart of the Swiss Alps, is among the most beautiful in Europe. The Verzasca River is also considered to be the cleanest river in the world. It is located in a valley in Switzerland's Italian-speaking region of Ticino. This mountain river is 30 km long and originates at an altitude of 2864 metres. Verzasca flows south, where it flows into Lake Maggiore.

The Verzasca River is unique for its beauty and the clarity of its waters. Through its crystal-clear turquoise waters, you can see beautiful coloured stones scattered along the bottom. The temperature of the crystal-clear water does not exceed 7 to 10 degrees Celsius. The river is not deep; its depth reaches only 10 metres. But in some places, powerful underwater currents prevail, so Verzasca can be quite insidious.

The Verzasca River in Switzerland is also a favourite spot for divers. No wonder the visibility of the water is so good! They strive to come here and see the world from a 15-metre depth through the prism of emerald water's distortions. The best time for this purpose is from late spring to early autumn. It is particularly striking that there are no living organisms in the river. Scientists suggest that the lack of flora and fauna is due to the increased acidity of the water.
Lush Mediterranean vegetation with chestnut forests and vineyards creates an incredible surrounding landscape that attracts tourists. The so-called Ponte dei Salti bridge, also known as the "Roman bridge", will help you see all the beauty of this place – admire the winding river and the fantastic colour of the surrounding landscape and see how the water sparkles with its purity.

It is sometimes wrongly called the «Roman Bridge», since its architecture with two arches only goes back as far as the Romantic period in the seventeenth century. Source: flickr |

I wonder if one can drink the water as is?
