Zhangjiajie mountains — One of the most distinctive features of the Zhangjiajie national forest park China is the numerous pillar-like formations found throughout Zhangjiajie national park. Although they resemble karst terrains, these formations are not underlain with limestones. They also do not reflect the chemical dissolution that is typical of limestone karst. The Chinese pillar mountains of the Zhangjiajie national forest are the result of many years of physical and chemical erosion. The hanging mountain pillars are formed by the expansion of ice in winter and the plants that live on them. Because the weather is humid all year, the foliage becomes very dense. The streams carry the weathered material away. These formations are an iconic feature of the Chinese landscape and can be seen in many old Chinese paintings.
