Patomskiy Crater – Strange Crater in Siberia

Patomskiy crater or Patom crater is a cone of crushed limestone boulders, located on the slope of one of the mountains of the Patomsky Upland. Here lies the border between the Irkutsk region and Yakutia, in the Bodaibo District of the Irkutsk Region, 180 km from the city of Lensk. From a bird's eye view, the Patomskiy crater resembles a huge bird's nest with an egg inside, that's why the local population calls this place the "Fire Eagle Nest". Also in different sources, can find the following names: "Kolpakov's Cone", "Dzhebuldinsky crater", "Yavaldinsky crater".

Patomskiy Crater

The famous geologist Vladimir Kolpakov found a strange formation in 1949 while exploring the Bodaibo region's taiga. A grey hill measuring 40 m high, and 76 meters in diameter, ran along the ridge. It was crowned by a funnel in which was located a hill of 12 m height. Later, the volume of the cone was calculated at between 230 and 250 thousand cubic meters. Its mass was approximately one million tons.

There have been many theories in the intervening years. Some suggest that the crater may have been created by an ancient civilisation, prisoners at a top-secret Stalin labour camp, volcanic activity, meteorites, underground hydrogen explosions, or UFOs. Even more intriguing is the existence of two UFOs.

Native peoples have told stories of the cursed crater for centuries, long before Kolpakov disclosed it to the rest of the world. Warnings that this 'Devil's Place' was dangerous for humans were included in these stories.

Fire Eagle Nest

This Russian crater was named Kolpakov's Cone, but then the locals began to call it "Fire Eagle Nest" since the formation in the centre of the Patomskiy crater is very reminiscent of a giant stone egg.

Crater in Russia – The Patom crater / Patomskiy crater anomaly is one of the most unusual and mysterious natural phenomena. The first puzzle is: Where did it come from? The second is why haven't people been studying it for so long? The first photographs of the crater were taken in 1971. They are more like the lunar than the earth.

Mysterious Crater – There are many versions of its appearance on the earth's surface. The most popular ones are of volcanic origin and extraterrestrial (from the fall of a meteorite). But the first is refuted by the fact that scientists could not find traces of lava. The second is questionable for several reasons. The boulders around the crater partially turned into dust, while others did not have time to erode, the Tunguska meteorite (many were inclined towards it) could not leave such a "trace" in 1908, because the first tree on the slopes of the "nest" appeared already in 1770. This means that the crater existed already then!

Eagles Nest Fire – Despite the lack of a unified version of the appearance of the Patom miracle, studies nevertheless made it possible to determine the approximate time of the formation of the Kolpakov Cone. Judging by the age of the new generation of larches that have grown around the crater, the object is approximately 500 years old or more.

Cratère Patomsky – Researchers believe there may be more similar objects west of the Patomsky Crater. Back in 2002, the Vitim bolide was fell here, then it is clear that the Bodaibo area is rich in bizarre phenomena of cosmic scale.

During the expedition in 2008, the following was established:

1. The age of the Patomskiy crater is much older than scientists initially assumed. 500 years or more, not 250 years old.

2. In 1842, the "nest" was "active". The trees growing next to it were literally bombarded with stones, and suddenly began to grow frighteningly fast under the influence of radioactive radiation. The rational background was restored only after 40 years.

3. At a depth of 100 m under the Patomskiy crater lies a highly conductive object of unknown origin. Some people think it is just a cavity filled with saltwater.

At the scientific conference "Patomsky crater-2010", held in St. Petersburg, scientists finally rejected the theory of the appearance of a "nest" due to a meteorite. Experts agreed that the nature of the crater is terrestrial. And only at the end of 2011, the generally accepted version was formulated most clearly:

The formation of the crater, which is obviously associated with the development of a deep magmatic process.

Complex studies have shown that the meteorite hypothesis about the origin of the Patomsky crater has been disproved. Its formation was caused by endogenous processes. The main role of which was the inflowing of fluid and gas components.

Patom crater – It was found that eruptive material in the form of blocks of sandstones and shales among limestones, brought out to the modern surface, was intensively carbonated. A mineral association of carbonate minerals formed in terrigenous rock: fluorite, siderite, ankerite, and siderite. It was possible to determine the depth of a sub-volcanic magmatic body by the discovery of individual blocks in terrigenous rock with unusual geochemical characteristics. This is what determined the material characteristics of the Patom rocks.

Mysterious crater in Russia – This "boring" assumption upset, but did not stop some activists who are still trying to learn the secrets of the "Fire Eagle Nest."
