Glass Beach

Glass Beach is an adjacent beach to MacKerricher State Park in Fort Bragg, California. It was named after a period when it was rich with sea glass, which resulted from years of garbage dumped into an area near the northern end of the town. It is against the law to collect glass in this state park.

Mendocino Beach,  Between 1906 and 1967, residents dumped their waste in the ocean at three different locations. After dumping became illegal in the late 1960s cleaning programs were established. The natural pounding force from the waves started to break up the glass and smooth it. The land was privately owned. In the late 1990s, the owner teamed with the Coastal Conservancy to clean it more thoroughly. Paths were constructed to remove any metal waste that was not completely demolished. The land was purchased by the State Parks in 2002 and officially opened as part of MacKerricher State Park.

Fort Bragg Beach, The north end of Fort Bragg has a path that leads to two of the original dumping areas. Although the southern beach has more sea glass than that of the northern beach it is slightly more difficult to reach due to a steep descent on a portion of the trail. Although the majority of the beach glass is still intact (especially non-white or green glasses), it can only be reached by sea kayak.
