Fort Alexander

Fort Alexander, also known as the Plague Fort, is a naval fortress located on an artificial island in the Gulf of Finland near St. Petersburg and Kronstadt. It was also known as Plague Fort. The fort was home to a research lab on plague and other bacterial illnesses from 1899 to 1917.

Fort Alexander — Peter I was the one who initiated the construction of forts on the Gulf of Finland. He also directed the foundation of Fort Kronshlot in 1704. Russia continued to fortify this area over the next two centuries. The builders drove 5535 piles, each 12 meters long, into the soil to strengthen the seabed. The piles were then covered with sand, concrete blocks, and granite slabs. Granite face-work was applied to the brickwork at the Kronstadt fortress foundation. On 27 July 1845, Emperor Nikolay I ordered the fort's construction; it was named in honor of his brother Emperor Alexander I.

The building is 90m by 60m in size and has three floors. Floor space totals more than 5000 sq. The total floor area is more than 5000 sq. The i fort had enough space to house a garrison of approximately 1000 men. There are 103 cannon points with extra space on the roof to hold 34 guns.

The fort plague Russia did not participate in any military operations. It played an important role in the Crimean War. It protected Kronstadt, a Russian naval base, from attacks by French and Royal Navy fleets.

The Russian government created a special Commission on the Prevention of Plague Disease (in the 1890s) to assist research in this particular area of bacteriology. The isolation of Fort Alexander St Petersburg led to the Commission establishing a new laboratory for research there in January 1897. Fort Alexander was restored to its original purpose by Duke Alexander Petrovich, who donated funds. In August 1899, research began in Fort Alexander Russia.

Plague Fort

The St Petersburg fort was officially owned by the Russian Navy after 1917. They maintained storage facilities and a repair workshop there. The fort plague was demolished and abandoned in 1983. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Kronstadt Fort Alexander was a popular place for rave parties. The administration of Constantine Palace in Strelna, the presidential conference centre, has been managing the fort Rus since 2005.

The administration of the fort declared its intention to find investors in the $43 million renovation project. Boat tours of the fort are now available.
