El Peñon de Guatape means The Rock of Guatape, a large rock with an estimated weight of 10 million tons and a height of more than 650 feet (200 meters), is a monolithic monument found in the city of Guatapé in Antioquia, Colombia. It was once worshipped by the Tahami Indians, the former inhabitants of the region. El Penol rock, completely smooth, with a long dry crack on one side. It was carved out of an impressive 740 steps, from a distance that looked like a huge stitch holding a mountain that appeared to be split in two.
El Peñol
El Peñon de Guatape also known as "La Piedra Del Peñol" "La Piedra" and "El Peñol" in Spanish, meaning "The Rock of Guatape" and "The Stone of El Peñol". The grand formation towers over the municipality of Guatapé, receiving hundreds of tourists every year interested in its spectacular nature and its fascinating history of Guatape Medellin Colombia.
La Piedra — The rock borders the towns of Guatapé and El Peñol, both had claimed long been opposed to the ownership of the rock. The story of competing for ownership of the rock happened once when the residents of the town of Guatape Medellin decided to solve this ownership problem by painting the name of their town on the rock in huge white letters.
El peñón de Guatapé — The residents of Penol town quickly discovered the work of the residents of Guatapé town, so they gathered at the rock in large numbers to protest against the painting, demanding that the town of Guatapé immediately stop marking this sovereignty. Thus, only one letter, "G" and half the letter "U" were completed. These two giant letters can still be seen on the northern surface of the rock today.
Piedra del Peñol
La Piedra del Peñol was first officially conquered by three climbers Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramírez, and Ramón Díaz. In July 1954, they used sticks fixed into the cracks in the Guatape rock to climb, and The idea of building stairs in this crack was implemented shortly after. During the 1940s, the Colombian government declared the rock a "National Monument" and a landmark inselberg in Colombia.
