Fadiouth, Shell island Senegal

Joal-Fadiouth, a commune and town in the Thies Region near the Petite Cote of Senegal is south-east of Dakar. It was also the home of Leopold Sedar Senghor's first president, during the history of independence. The shell island Senegal, Joal-Fadiut, a fishing village, because the whole island is covered in shells, this place has been renowned for its uniqueness.

Joal-Fadiouth Island

Joal-Fadiouth island village is split into two parts. Joal is located on the mainland and Fadiouth on the island. Both are connected with wooden bridge, approximately 500 meters in length. Senegalese coastline's very shallow waters and high temperatures have resulted in a unique combination. The ideal environment for breeding shellfish. Over the millennia tide and nature have slowly moved towards the coast, creating "shell fossils".

Island Made of Shells

Joal is on the mainland while Fadiouth lies on an island with clam shells. These shells are used in local architecture as well as crafts. Signs at the entrance indicate that there is no motorized transport in the village. There are large Christian and Muslim communities with cemeteries located on an island shell. Granaries built on stilts and positioned in the water are another attraction. More than 50,000 people live in the commune.
