How Was Shirogane Blue Pond Created?

Although it looks natural, Shirogane Blue Pond is actually man-made. It came about by accident as part of an effort to control erosion in the Biei area, which was at risk from volcanic mudflows linked to Mount Tokachi. The project was started in 1988 with the construction of a dam as part of a system to prevent mudflows. Water collected behind the dam, eventually forming the distinctive pond that exists today. This makes Blue Pond especially interesting because its unusual appearance is the result of a combination of human engineering, volcanic geology, minerals, and sunlight.

Shirogane Blue Pond is located in Shirogane, Biei Town, in the Kamikawa region of Hokkaido. It is about 20 minutes by car from JR Biei Station, and buses also connect the area to Biei and Asahikawa. Nearby attractions include Shirahige Falls and Shirogane Onsen, making the Blue Pond a convenient part of a larger Biei sightseeing route.

There isn't one single best time to visit, as the experience can vary depending on what you're looking for. If you want to see the famous blue water without snow, the warmer months are usually ideal.

For colorful views, autumn offers a beautiful contrast between the blue pond and the surrounding foliage. Winter, on the other hand, presents a completely different experience, with snow-covered landscapes and illuminated nights. Also, visitors should be aware that the pond can be crowded. The Biei Tourism Association recommends visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds that peak during the day.
