When photographer Leslie David stopped at an old house in Ontario, Canada, she thought she had found another abandoned building to photograph. The property looked deserted, with an overgrown driveway, a collapsing roof, and a neglected interior.
But the house was not empty.
Inside, Leslie met an elderly man named Lawrence, who was still living there. What began as an unexpected encounter during an urban-exploration trip gradually became a friendship that lasted well beyond that first meeting. Leslie later shared photographs and updates about Lawrence through her online account, and their story spread widely.
The House Leslie Thought Was Abandoned
One day in 2015, she stopped at a house that looked deserted after years of neglect. The driveway was overgrown, the roof was in poor condition, and the inside looked much like the abandoned properties Leslie normally photographed. There was just one problem: someone was still living there.
Leslie Meets Lawrence
Inside the house, Leslie found Lawrence. According to accounts based on Leslie's own social media posts, Lawrence had difficulty getting around and spent much of his time inside the house. He welcomed Leslie and allowed her to take his photograph, despite the unexpected arrival of a stranger. The meeting could easily have ended there. Leslie could have taken a few photographs, left the property, and continued looking for another abandoned building. Instead, she decided to come back. That decision changed the story completely.
From a Photograph to a Friendship
The friendship also became practical. Leslie helped improve the condition of Lawrence's home, with assistance from other people and a local business. Old appliances, rubbish, and other unwanted material were removed, giving Lawrence more usable space inside the house. It was no longer simply a story about a photograph finding an abandoned house. It had become a story about what happened after she discovered that the house was actually someone's home.
Why the Story Became So Popular
That realisation also raised an uncomfortable question: how many houses that appear abandoned are actually still connected to someone's life? Several websites, including Newsner and PetaPixel, subsequently republished the story, both describing Leslie's unusual discovery and her growing friendship with Lawrence. The original social media posts are particularly important because many later articles simply repeated or shortened Leslie's own account.
What Happened to Lawrence?
A Later Change in His Life
Leslie continued sharing updates about Lawrence. Later reports based on her posts said that Lawrence experienced serious health difficulties and eventually spent time in hospital. He was subsequently moved to a local retirement home, where Leslie continued visiting him. One update described him as safer and more comfortable in his new surroundings, although he missed his old home.
Leslie also brought her dog, Violet, during some visits. The photographs and updates changed the way many people viewed the original discovery. What had started with an apparently abandoned house had become a record of an elderly man's life and an unexpected friendship.
The Lesson Behind the Abandoned House
The story also shows why urban exploration can involve more than architecture and photography. Old buildings can still have owners, occupants, memories, and personal histories attached to them. In Lawrence's case, the building that looked empty from the road was still his home. Leslie's decision to return, rather than simply photograph the place and leave, became the most memorable part of the entire story.

The story of Leslie David and Lawrence began with something that seemed ordinary for an urban explorer: an old house that looked abandoned. Then Leslie opened the door and discovered that it wasn't abandoned at all.
Instead of simply taking photographs and walking away, she returned to see Lawrence again. Meals, conversations, outings, and practical help followed, turning a chance encounter into a genuine friendship. ReplyDeleteI came across this site today. It is fantastic. I worked with older, sometime lost souls in nursing homes for over 18 years and feel that I restored life interests in many, as they are a fascinating people who are often discarded. What a shame. Share your time and life with someone; no person should be randomly discarded and ignored; they are all precious souls. What a wonderful world this would be if we forgot the "me" attitude and reached out to others, especially the discarded elderly. Share your love and time with others more needy. Thank you for this lovely photo presentation. There are many old abandoned persons in this world, not just abandoned houses.
