This includes countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Palicourea Elata can be extremely sensitive and needs specific climates in order to grow. Those climates that are most similar to rainforests are the best for this red lips plant. It is best known for its distinctively shaped red bracts, which are why it is nicknamed "Hot Lips". Hooker lips flower is a shrub belonging to the Rubiaceae, commonly known as the coffee, madder or bedstraw families. The Rubiaceae are known for their simple, opposite leaves and interpetiolar details. They can be terrestrial trees, herbs, or lianas. The understory layer of rainforests is where this psychotria elata plant will be found. The species can grow up to 3 meters tall, sometimes reaching 4 meters. Because of the influence of the surrounding plants and the light availability, the plant's morphology may be very variable. These variables as well as the overall resources available to Psychotria Elata have been shown to influence the beteriomechanics and allometry of Psychotria Elata. This can then affect height and leaf count.

Psychotria Elata's most distinctive feature is its red bracts. These are a modified set of leaves. Flowers that look like lips — The bracts look like a pair of human lips before the flowers bloom. Psychotria Elata flowers bloom between December and March and are small star-shaped flowers.
