Frozen Methane Bubbles
Lake Abraham is especially popular for its ice cover is dotted with fabulous patterns that form under the surface of the water from frozen gas bubbles.
Abraham lake, Canada —The reason for this natural phenomenon is very simple: flammable ice bubbles rise from the bottom of the lake to the already frozen edge of the ice. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and it is a highly flammable gas.
Abraham Lake Canada
It happens as follows. Dead plants from the bottom of the Abraham lake produce methane throughout the winter, which rises from the bottom of the lake in the form of gas bubbles. Rise from the bottom of the lake, methane bubbles in ice stick into the ice layer and accumulate under the frozen surface. As the temperature decreases, the ice thickness gradually increases, capturing more and more gas bubbles at an ever greater depth. As a result, peculiar columns of bubbles are formed, frozen into the ice at different depths under each other.
The extraordinary beauty of this bubble lake attracts many photographers from all over the world every winter. However, walking along it does not evoke pleasant memories for most photographers in the Saskatchewan Valley. |
