Lepakshi Hanging Pillar

A mysterious 20 feet tall pillar is hanging from the ceiling of Veerabhadra temple in Lepakshi. Lepakshi temple is  a famous holy places in Andhra Pradesh.

The temple was built between 1530 and 1545 by Virupanna and Viranna, brothers who were Governors of the Vijayanagar Empire under King Achutaraya's reign at Penukonda. The government paid for the cost of the construction of the lepakshi temple Andhra Pradesh.

Another attraction is the Hanging Pillar. There is a gap between the base of the pillar and the ground through which paper and cloth can pass, which means that the column is not supported by the ground. One wonders what tools would have been used to create a thin gap between the pillar and the rocky cliff below it. The roof of the temple is raised by 69 pillars, and one pillar hangs in the air from the ceiling, all 70 pillars carved with marvelous art by master craftsmen.

Lepakshi Temple

The floating pillar is now slightly out of its original place. However, it is believed that a British engineer attempted to move it during British times in an unsuccessful bid to discover the secret behind its support. It is not surprising that neither the curious British engineer nor any subsequent British engineers have been able to solve the mystery of how the Lepakshi temple hanging pillar was made. The Lepakshi temple is an amazing example of artistic and archaeological splendor.

It is a 16th-century Vijayanagara-style stone temple. However, the most famous temples in ancient and medieval India are among the oldest and a testament to the engineering genius of the builders.
