Magnificent Garden Château de Marqueyssac, France

Château de Marqueyssac, located in the Dordogne region, in the small town of Vézac, attracts travellers to France due to its tourist attractions – the ancient castle of Marqueyssac and its surrounding grand garden, consisting of a maze of boxwood shrubs that gardeners gave correct and fanciful geometric shapes. The provincial town of Vézac (Fr. Vézac) in France is known worldwide for its extraordinary gardens. The unique park landscape, the ancient 17th-century castle, and the observation deck with stunning views of the valley make the site a place that attracts endless streams of tourists and locals.

From the height on which the romantic castle Markizyak stands, the beauty of the picturesque valley opens up. The real highlight of the castle garden is the Markizyak Dordogne belvedere – a unique viewing platform that offers great views of the meandering river flowing through the valley. Marquesessac Castle was founded in the 17th century and was originally built as a residence for the rest, but its construction was treated as the creation of a powerful fortress. Even the powerful roof, made of grey limestone, weighs more than five tonnes. But the castle is famous not only for its Markizyak architecture. Leading him, stone paths lead visitors to a man-made labyrinth of living green waves and balls. This area is the famous hanging gardens of Marqueyssac, which cover an area of about 22 hectares and consist of 150,000 age-old boxwood shrubs.

Boxwood is trimmed by hand every spring and autumn, and now secular plants give the same shape as several hundred years ago. In perfect condition, bushes support four gardeners. In the late XVII century, the aristocratic family that owned the estate since 1692 laid out the landscaped gardens of the old castle Markizyak. For years, the owners of the castle, oblashtovuvaly, romanticised the garden for pleasant walks, supplementing it with new plants that, thanks to the gardeners, took on a truly bizarre appearance. At the origins of the gardens on the slopes around the castle and stepped terraces stood gardener Le Notre, who became the founder of his school of landscape design at the time.

The ancient castle Markizyak was opened to the public only in 1996 after extensive renovations, during which photos and pictures of past centuries were taken. Now it has become one of the most famous attractions in central France and features a garden in the Italian style that attracts connoisseurs of landscape art. In the castle courtyard and lovely garden, regular guided tours are available, but anyone can come to this picturesque corner, preferably in the morning, as the park covers 22 hectares. Strolling through the shaded alleys, the total length is more than six miles; guests can admire the Markizyak Castle and tens of thousands of clipped boxwood centenarians, marvelling at the grand plan of the gardeners. Set amidst a park of Gothic chapels and romantic rotundas, fine dry stone huts fit perfectly into the landscaped garden; a rock garden and gazebo are bright patches in the man-made sea of green.
