Giant's Causeway Ireland

Northern Ireland's giant causeway is a stunning natural place. This coast features naturally formed hexagonal rock, which has become known as the "Giant Causeway". It is made up of more than 40,000 hexagonal rock formations of black Basalt. Although it isn't known how these incredible natural giants' steps in Ireland were created, volcanic activity is most likely to be the cause. It is possible to create such bizarre structures from lava if it is allowed to cool down and harden over time.

Giant's Causeway Ireland

Legends tell of giants walking across the ocean to Scotland. These formations have been the subject of geological research over the past 300 years. They are the result of volcanic activity in the Tertiary, about 50-60 million years ago. The formation of Giant's Causeway was due to intense volcanic activity. A "lava plateau" is formed when lava rises through cracks in chalk. Volcanic activity formed the Lower, Middle, and Upper Basalts over three periods. It's the Middle Basalt that is responsible for the famed amphitheatre of the hexagonal columns in the Causeway.

The Giant's Causeway plays a major part in Ireland's heritage, attracting visitors from around the world each year since it was first documented in 1693 and realistic sketches were published in 1740. The Giant's Causeway has often been described as the Eighth Wonder of the World and was declared Ireland's first World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1986.
