Namib Desert, Where the Desert meets the Ocean

The Namib is a coastal desert in southern Africa. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place". According to the broadest definition, the Namib stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres or 1,200 mi along the Atlantic coasts of Angola. Namib is well known for the world's oldest desert and has been in existence for some 43 million years, remaining unchanged in its present form for the last 2 million years.  The most widespread and dominant type of desert sand dune are linear dunes, with crescent shaped dunes common along the coast and clusters of star dunes, such as the towering horseshoe of dunes at Sossusvlei, found in the eastern reaches of the sand sea. Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert is the one attraction that should not be missed while you are in Namibia; the dunes are amazing and even though this is a popular tourist destination it is still easy to gain a sense of solitude while climbing one of the dunes or walking to Dead or Hidden Vlei. The Namib Desert section of the Namib-Naukluft Park also includes the Swakop and Kuiseb River Canyons.

Ships Graveyard in the Desert of Moynaq, Uzbekistan

Moynaq ship Graveyard — Mo‘ynoq also spelled as Muynak and Moynaq, is a city in northern Karakalpakstan in western Uzbekistan. Formerly a sea port, now home to only a few thousand residents at most, Mo‘ynoq's population has been declining precipitously since the 1980s due to the recession of the Aral Sea. 30 years ago Moynaq was one of two biggest Soviet fishing harbours at the Aral Sea. The Aral Sea has been steadily decreasing since the 1960s, as the waters of the two rivers feeding it, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, were aimed at irrigating agricultural areas. Formerly one of the four largest lakes in the world with an area of 68,000 km2 or 26,300 sq mi, the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since in 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects.  In 2007, it had declined to 10% of its original size, splitting into four lakes – the North Aral Sea, the eastern and western basins of the once far larger South Aral Sea, and one smaller lake between the North and South Aral Seas. However, in 2009, the southeastern lake had disappeared and the southwestern lake had retreated to a thin strip at the extreme west of the former southern sea. The maximum depth of the North Aral Sea is 42 meter or 138 ft in 2008.

NASA's Airbus Industries, Super Guppy

The Boeing 377SG Super Guppy flew for the first time on 31 August 1965. Without the Super Guppy, the only other way to get NASA's Apollo rocket stages from California to Florida was on a slow boat through the Panama Canal. The Super Guppy cut not just days, but weeks and months out of the schedules. Of course, this success was also its downfall. Once the Apollo and Skylab programs were terminated, dwindling public interest in the space program forced cutbacks in funding. In an attempt to keep the company afloat, Aero Spacelines had to look for commercial applications for the Guppy.

NASA's B-377-SG/SGT-4 Super Guppy arrived at Tinker in April 3, 2008 for a programmed depot maintenance-like inspection. Yet, when inspectors examined the aircraft, they noticed significant corrosion and suggested the aircraft be refurbished.

Grass Roofs in Norway

Is this the way of going Go Green? I dont think so, First  I think this is natural, but the Norwegians traditional type of green roof covered with sod on top of several layers of birch bark on gently sloping wooden roof boards and this roof called sod roof or turf roof. The late 19th century, it was the most common roof on rural log houses in large parts of Norway. Its distribution roughly corresponds to the distribution of the log building technique in the vernacular architecture of Finland and the Scandinavian peninsula. The load of approximately 250 kg per m² of a sod roof is an advantage because it helps to compress the logs and make the walls more draught-proof. In winter the total load may well increase to 400 or 500 kg per m² because of snow. Sod is also a reasonably efficient insulator in a cold climate. The birch bark underneath ensures that the roof will be waterproof and long-lasting.

The Grove of Titans and Giant Redwoods Tree, California

The Coast Redwood or California Redwood — Sequoia sempervirens is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae (formerly treated in Taxodiaceae). Common names include coast redwood and California redwood. It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 1,200–1,800 years or more. This species includes the tallest trees living now on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m) in height (without the roots) and up to 26 feet (7.9 m) in diameter at breast height. Before commercial logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred naturally in an estimated 2,100,000 acres (8,500 km2) along much of coastal California (excluding southern California where rainfall is not sufficient) and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon within the United States. An estimated 95% or more of the original old-growth redwood trees have been cut down due to their excellent properties for use as lumber in construction. The name sequoia sometimes refers to the subfamily Sequoioideae, which includes S. sempervirens along with Sequoiadendron (giant sequoia) and Metasequoia (dawn redwood). On its own, the term redwood usually refers to the coast redwood, which is covered in this article, and not to the other two species.

Låtefossen waterfall | Twin Waterfall in Oddadalen valley, Norway

Låtefossen or Låtefoss is a waterfall in Oddadalen "The Odda Valley" in western Norway. Låtefoss waterfall is a famous twin waterfall close to Route 13 in Oddadalen valley. It is among Norway’s most popular and most visited waterfalls simply by proxy of nearly spraying onto the primary road between Odda and Haugesund. The river Austdølo pools in a moderate lake immediately above the falls and creates two outlets as it finds its way into the Oddadalen. The twin channels of the river both cascade in twisting courses, seemingly mirroring each other, falling a total of 311 feet (95 m) before funneling under the wonderfully rustic six-arched bridge along Route 13. The falls are commonly claimed to stand 540 feet (165m), however topographic data shows this to be a clear impossibility (this figure was likely established when surveying the falls for possible hydroelectric use). Unfortunately due to the narrow confines of the valley and the twisting, prolonged shape of the falls, the entire waterfall is very difficult to see, let alone appreciate when viewing from the base.

According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair. The balancing rock seems to defy gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of rolling down the hill. The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo. It is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda. A glimpse of the "gravity defying" Golden Rock is believed to be enough of an inspiration for any person to turn to Buddhism.

Oscar Wilde's Tomb Marked From Lipstick

The memorial of the famous 19th century Irish writer and poet, Oscar Wilde, lies in Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France. The memorial, sculpted from a 20-ton piece of Hopton Wood rock in Derbyshire, England, unveiled to the London press in June 1912, and covered with thousands of traces of red lipstick. What do you think, who is resting?  "A kiss may ruin a human life," Oscar Wilde once wrote. It can also ruin the stonework of a tomb, judging by the extraordinary graffiti – kisses in lipstick left by admirers – that for years have been defacing and even eroding the massive memorial to the Irish dramatist and wit in Paris's Père Lachaise cemetery.

Horizontal Falls | Kimberley, Australia

The Horizontal Falls or Horizontal Waterfalls (nicknamed the "Horries") is the name given to a natural phenomenon on the coast of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The Horizontal Falls are one of the most amazing natural features of the Kimberley region.  The tidal waterfalls located deep within Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago are unlike any other waterfall, the water passes horizontally. Although they are called waterfalls, this natural phenomenon actually consists of intense tidal currents hurtling through two narrow coastal gorges. Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, to be repeated again on the turning tide.

The Mano de Desierto | Sculpture of a Giant Hand located in the Atacama Desert, Chile

The Mano de Desierto is a sculpture of a giant hand located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, 75 km to the south of the city of Antofagasta, on the Panamerican Highway. The nearest point of reference is the "Ciudad Empresarial La Negra" (La Negra Business City). This giant sculpture was constructed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level. Irarrázabal used the human figure to express emotions like injustice, loneliness, sorrow and torture. Its exaggerated size is said to emphasize human vulnerability and helplessness. The work has a base of iron and cement, and stands 11 metres (36 ft) tall. Funded by Corporación Pro Antofagasta, a local booster organization, the sculpture was inaugurated on March 28, 1992. It has since become a point of interest for tourists traveling Route 5, which forms part of the Pan-American Highway. It is an easy victim of graffiti and is therefore cleaned occasionally.
