The history of the Trevi Fountain dates back to 19 BC. Then it became the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which brought water to the Roman baths and fountains in the city center. It is said that the name Aqua Virgo (virgin waters) comes from a young Roman girl who showed the soldiers a source of pure water. From where the aqueduct was subsequently drawn. Trevi fountain architecture - The first fountain was built during the Renaissance under the leadership of Pope Nicholas V. In 1730, Pope Clemens XII announced a competition to create a new Rome fountain. Many famous architects participated. But in the end, as a result, Nicola Salvi got the right to design the Italian fountain. Although some historians say that he may not have been the first architect.
Alessandro Galilei, an architect from the legendary astronomer Galileo Galilei family, was initially commissioned to design the fountain. But in the end, the order was given to Salvi. Why did it happen? The reason is banal - Galileo was a Florentine, and Salvi was a Roman by birth. But Salvi never finished his fountain. It wasn't until 1762 that another Pope, Clemens XIII, officially completed construction and opened the new Trevi Fountain, 11 years after Salvi's death.
