Fontana di trevi

As you can imagine, the Trevi fountain in Rome is not only a water show. It is also a sculptural composition filled with deep meaning. Especially perceive the majestic facade of the palace and the Fountain together. There is a statue of the Ocean (or Neptune, the lord of the water element) by Pietro Bracci in the Fountain center. The giant stands on a chariot drawn by sea horses, accompanied by newts.

Note that one of the sea horses is calm, and the other is violent. This symbolizes the different states of the Ocean.

To the left of Neptune is the statue of the very Virgin who showed the way to a pure source of water. This statue represents health and purity. On the right is a sculpture representing abundance. For a long time, the water from the Trevi Fountain was considered the softest and tastiest in Rome. For centuries, barrels of this water were taken to the Vatican every week. However, now this water cannot be drunk.

Famous fountain in Italy

The history of the Trevi Fountain dates back to 19 BC. Then it became the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which brought water to the Roman baths and fountains in the city center. It is said that the name Aqua Virgo (virgin waters) comes from a young Roman girl who showed the soldiers a source of pure water. From where the aqueduct was subsequently drawn.  If we look at the fountain, we see the middle ocean, with a long beard (similar to wisdom) and a stick. This statue is in the middle of De 'Crocicchi Street, Poli Street, and Delle Muratte Street.

Trevi fountain architecture - The first fountain was built during the Renaissance under the leadership of Pope Nicholas V. In 1730, Pope Clemens XII announced a competition to create a new Rome fountain. Many famous architects participated. But in the end, as a result, Nicola Salvi got the right to design the Italian fountain. Although some historians say that he may not have been the first architect.

Alessandro Galilei, an architect from the legendary astronomer Galileo Galilei family, was initially commissioned to design the fountain. But in the end, the order was given to Salvi. Why did it happen? The reason is banal - Galileo was a Florentine, and Salvi was a Roman by birth. But Salvi never finished his fountain. It wasn't until 1762 that another Pope, Clemens XIII, officially completed construction and opened the new Trevi Fountain, 11 years after Salvi's death. Completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others

Why coins are thrown into the Trevi fountain

Often, many travelers throw coins into almost all fountains. Of course, this also applies to the Trevi Fountain. Why are there always people throwing coins in the trevi fountain?

Three coins in the trevi fountain

The myth that originated in 1954 from the movie Three Coins in the Fountain goes something like this:
  • Throw in one coin, and you'll be back in Rome one more time
  • Throwing the second coin - you will fall in love
  • If you flip the third coin, you will soon get married.

As you can imagine, this is mainly for women. To achieve the desired effect, throw the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder. It is worth noting that this tradition dates back to the ancient Romans. They often threw coins into the water for the water gods to bless their journey and help them return home.

According to statistics, about 1 million euros worth of coins is taken out of the Fountain every year. The record was recorded in 2016. Then 1.4 million euros were thrown into the Trevi fountain

Fontana di Trevi - In addition, it is an iconic landmark in Rome and an excellent backdrop for some films. In addition to La Dolce Vita, where Anita Ekberg jumped into the Trevi Fountain, the massive monument has been featured in many feature films, including Roman Holiday, Three Coins in the Fountain, and Lizzie McGuire. The fountain has even been reproduced at Walt Disney World Park.
