Chinoike Jigoku is an extraordinary pond located near the Japanese city of Beppu. The Japanese word "Chinoike Jigoku" means "Bloody Hell Pond", which is filled with red water. The pond's watercolour changes according to the weather. In sunny weather, the pond colour turned orange-red, while in cloudy weather it turned bright scarlet. During a thunderstorm, the landscape becomes truly mystical: the water in the pond becomes like real blood. A red reservoir is formed by a large content of magnesium and iron oxide in the source.
The geysers in the underwater cave spew more than 50,000 cubic metres of water each night. Water periodically fills the cave, and the magma heats, leading almost to a boil. After that, there is an emission of red water into the lake, and it appears that the lake boils. This phenomenon occurs every 40 minutes. Swimming in the Bloody Pond is prohibited because the water temperature reaches 90 degrees. Above the surface of the Bloody Pond, steam rises, which creates the impression of being in hell.
The green foliage on the banks of the Red Pond, combined with the rising steam from the boiling red water, creates a truly incredible sight that attracts thousands of tourists. Since its establishment in 1924, Beppu City has become popular among tourists. Every year, this place is visited by about 12 million tourists from all over the world. A small fence surrounds the pond to protect unwary tourists.
