It is vertically standing on the seashore layer of sandstone, separated from the main rock massif by a dip. The shape of the rock resembles the outline of a quadrangular sail, for which it received its name. With a rock thickness of a little more than a meter, the height is more than 25 meters, and a length is more than 20 (various sources indicate a height of 30 meters and a length of 25 meters), while more than three-quarters of the rock protrudes into the sea perpendicular to the shore.

Rock Sail in Gelendzhik - a favorite place of romantics, fans of the genuine beauty of nature, the power of the sea, and solitude. Many scientists still do not know how this rock was formed, which originates on the coast, and ends at sea. Not far from this place is a group of ancient Dolmens.

Rock Sail keeps a lot of mysteries. Scientists do not know exactly how such an unusual architectural structure came into being. Locals believe that the rock was many hundreds of years ago, only part of the ground, and then the forces of nature disposed of so that this dense component broke into pieces, the rocks ran over each other, forming a kind of large rock.

In Gelendzhik, the rock Sail is an object of myths and legends. The indigenous people fantasize the guides pick up these legends, so tourists can only be content with speculation about the origin of many historical sites and architectural monuments.

There is an opinion that Prometheus was once chained to Sail Rock, a titan who protects people from injustice and the wrath of gods. This myth is also confirmed by the fact that the nearby village of Praskoveyevka has Greek roots. The Greeks lived there for a long time, but gradually the indigenous population was replaced by Russians and settlers from Georgia and other countries.

The most intriguing mystery of the Sail rock is a jagged hole located near its base. The exact cause of its appearance has not been found until now. Many guides tell tourists that the hole appeared during the Russian-Turkish war, when a shell of a Turkish ship punched a rock, leaving such an original mark. But these data are just a hypothesis of scientists and conjectures of local residents.
