Kingsley Lake – Roundest Lakes in the World

Kingsley Lake, the lake of a perfect circle — Kingsley Lake is an almost perfect circle of about two thousand acres, or 8.1 square Km, located 9.7 kilometres east of the town of Starke, in Bradford County, North Central Florida, United States. The lake, which is like a circle, is visible from the air like a silver dollar coin.

The Oldest Lake In Florida — Studies indicate that it is one of the oldest and tallest lakes in the state, situated on the eastern slope of Trail Ridge, which was the first part of the Florida peninsula to emerge above sea level in the Pleistocene era. Geologists also believe it was formed as a giant hole more than thirty metres deep at its deepest point.

This beautiful lake is rich in history and geological significance and is one of the most popular recreational spots in northeast Florida for its calm, crystal-clear waters, widely used for recreational sports such as water skiing and fishing. The water always stays fresh and clean during the summer months as it is fed by numerous underground sources around the coast and the lake itself.

Around the lake, about 180 docks are mainly in its western part, where the settlement of the same name is located. In addition, Camp Blanding is on the east side of the lake as part of the Florida National Guard, and a small airstrip to the southeast of the lake is part of Camp Blanding.

The lake is about 1.5 kilometres east of the historic Alachua Trail towards Georgia and was a favourite trail used by Indians on their travels in the past. This trail was the scene of many incidents between Indians and white men during the 1830s and 40s.

According to legend, one such incident occurred when a young cavalry officer, Captain Kingsley, was surrounded by Indians on a trail south of the lake, and his only way to escape was to ride his horse into the lake and swim to the west coast. Unfortunately, the horse was said to have dropped dead from exhaustion, and the lake has been called Kingsley ever since.
