House on the Rock in Wisconsin is one of the strangest architectural attractions in the United States. Perched on a natural chimney of rock near Spring Green, Wisconsin, this extraordinary complex began as a private retreat and gradually grew into a substantial collection of unusual rooms, galleries, mechanical displays, gardens and curiosities.

What makes the place so fascinating is that it is difficult to describe as simply a house or a museum. It is part architecture, part collection and part fantasy. Visitors move from the original house into enormous exhibition spaces filled with antique objects, music machines, miniature scenes, model ships and other eccentric displays.
The Story Behind House on the Rock
It all started in the 1940s when Alex Jordan began developing Deer Shelter Rock in Wisconsin's scenic Wyoming Valley. In 1945, Jordan began working on his dream of creating a retreat on the rock, according to the attraction's official history. The first building was eventually called the Original House. It was opened to the general public in 1960, but Jordan's idea did not end there. In subsequent decades, he continued to add to the property with new buildings, collections and elaborate exhibits. The result is the sprawling House on the Rock attraction that we see today. It wasn't based on a traditional architectural blueprint; instead, it grew from Jordan's ever-expanding imagination and collecting interests.

What Can You See at House on the Rock?
The attraction is divided into different areas, and each one has its character. Some rooms feel historical, while others are deliberately bizarre.
The Original House
The Original House is the heart of the attraction. The official House on the Rock describes it as having 13 rooms, each with its own architectural character and details. Sandstone, stained glass and carefully designed interiors give the original section a very different atmosphere from the enormous exhibition spaces that came later.
The Infinity Room
The Infinity Room is perhaps the most famous feature of House on the Rock. The unusual structure projects 218 feet over the valley and contains more than 3,000 pieces of glass. From the room, visitors can look out across the surrounding landscape. Its dramatic design is one reason House on the Rock has become such a recognisable attraction in Wisconsin.
The World's Largest Carousel
Another major attraction is the enormous World's Largest Carousel. The official site says it contains 269 animals, 20,000 lights and 182 chandeliers, creating one of the most visually overwhelming displays in the complex. Unlike an ordinary amusement-park carousel, this one presents itself as a spectacular indoor art and mechanical display.

Streets of Yesterday and Other Collections
Streets of Yesterday
Streets of Yesterday recreates a 19th-century American street, complete with brick-paved avenues, period-style buildings, and hundreds of antiques. It offers an entirely different experience from the futuristic feel of the Infinity Room.
Heritage of the Sea
The Heritage of the Sea collection features more than 200 model ships and a Titanic display. One of its most memorable features is a gigantic 200-foot-long sea creature, adding another surreal element to the attraction.
Music of Yesterday and Spirit of Aviation
Other sections contain elaborate automated music machines, mechanical instruments, and displays connected with aviation history. The Spirit of Aviation exhibit includes a sky filled with model aeroplanes, while Music of Yesterday features mechanical musical displays.
Where Is the House on the Rock?
The House on the Rock is located at 5754 State Road 23, Spring Green, Wisconsin 53588. It is located in southwestern Wisconsin, near the village of Spring Green. The attraction is also part of a region known for other notable places, including Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Wisconsin home.

Why House on the Rock Is So Unusual
The appeal of the House on the Rock in Wisconsin is not simply its architecture. It is the sheer variety of things packed into the complex. One moment you are walking through the historic-feeling Original House; the next, you are surrounded by enormous mechanical displays, antique collections, or a fantastical carousel. That mixture is what makes the attraction difficult to compare with a conventional museum. It is a physical record of Alex Jordan's imagination and an ever-expanding collection of the unusual. For anyone interested in strange architecture, unusual places, bizarre museums, and hidden attractions in Wisconsin, House on the Rock remains one of Wisconsin's most memorable attractions.
