Renaissance statue — On April 3, 2010, the third president of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, inaugurated the monument (senegal monument de la renaissance) commemorating the 50th anniversary of the country's independence from France, with the participation of 15 presidents of African countries. The 52-metre-long monument, which weighs 7,000 tonnes, was built by the famous architect Pierre Gudabi at the request of President Wade to explain the liberation of Africa, particularly Senegal, from the yoke of Western countries.

The Dakar statue is on the highest peak in Senegal's capital, Dakar.
To get to the monument, you have to climb 198 stairs; there it is written: “Young African, think of those who sacrificed their freedoms and lives if you are cold when climbing this monument!" Every day, tourists from different parts of the world come to visit this magnificent sculpture.
African statue, Senegal — From the 15th floor, visitors can observe Dakar, surrounded by the ocean on three sides, in a panoramic view. On the lower floors of the African Renaissance Monument in Senegal, visitors can find a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian Independence Movement, and also watch movies about Senegal's western colonial period.
At the African resistance monument, the phrases of Martin Luther King and Barack Obama, "I have a dream" and "Yes, we can do it", along with their portraits and those of Senegalese presidents, as well as a painting that represents the slave house on the island of Goree.
The Statue in Africa, which was designed as a cultural centre especially for the younger generation of Africans, was built to last at least 12 centuries. On the other hand, the African renaissance statue, in which the woman is represented half-naked, was criticised by a segment of society for not reflecting Islamic values. In addition, during its construction, it received great criticism for its cost of 27 million dollars since half of the population lives under the poverty line in the country.
