Boiling Lake: Dominica

BOILING LAKE — The area of volcanic activity in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Dominica, is in the Caribbean. This park covers nearly 7,000 hectares and features five volcanoes, many hot springs, and other craters, as well as a large, famous boiling lake. Dominica Boiling Lake is actually a submerged hole or vent in the earth's crust. The grey-green pool of water bubbles at around 92 degrees Celsius. The heat and gas from the molten lava below warm the water. A cloud of water vapour covers the lake's surface.

Boiling Lake in Dominica has a width of about 76 m; it is the second-largest thermal lake in the world after Frying Pan Lake, "Boiling Lake New Zealand", in the Waimangu Valley near Rotorua, New Zealand.

In 1875, two English gentlemen were the first to see a hot water lake. Later that year, a government botanist made the discovery of this natural phenomenon possible. They measured the water temperature, and it fluctuated between 82 and 92°C at the corners. However, they were unable to measure the temperature at the centre of the boiling lake, where the water was boiling. According to them, the lake is 60 metres deep or more.

Its greyish-blue water can be easily seen in its constant rolling-boil state, which looks almost like a large pot of water boiling and steaming on the stove. Rainfall and two small streams replenish the basin's water. The water of the boiling lake in Dominica seeps into the magma, where it is heated to the boiling point, and then passes through the valley of desolation in Dominica, another volcanic area. The area's air is hot, steamy, and humid, with a strong, pungent smell of sulphur.

Rainwater and two streams are responsible for the water in the lake. The water seeps into the lava, where it is heated to the boiling point. While the water level of the lake fluctuates, its activity decreases over time.
