In the English city of Bristol is one of the most spectacular engineering structures of the world - Clifton Suspension Bridge. Its length - 230 m, 190 m of which just "hang" over the precipice - the gorge of the River Avon. The construction of the bridge was carried out under the supervision of an English engineer Brunel. It was his first major project, which has brought worldwide recognition to the constructor.
The idea of building a bridge across the River Avon Gorge originated in 1753. Originally planned to make a bridge of stone, then iron. In 1831, construction of the bridge was suspended because of the riots in Bristol, and only after the death of Brunel in 1859, resumed with renewed vigor. Colleagues engineers decided that the completion of this bridge will be the best monument Brunel. As a result, the project has been changed slightly, and Clifton Suspension Bridge was a bit higher, wider and stronger than the original version. Unfortunately, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and also enjoys the sad glory - chosen by a high bridge span except for extreme and suicide. [First Image credit John-Starnes]

This is an awesome British landmark, and seeing it in the flesh can't really be done justice to with a photograph. Struggled mightily to get some good shots despite extensive hideous grey cloudiness! Image credit James Beard |
