Ganvié Lake Village

Benin Ganvie Village is a lake village, 18 kilometres from Cotunú, in Benin, which is the largest lake village in Benin in Africa. It is home to about 20,000 people and is the country's most popular tourist attraction. It is only accessible by boat due to its unique location. The Tofinu people established the town in the 16th and 17th centuries. They settled on the lake as the Dahomey religion forbade warriors from entering it. This made the lagoon safe for the other tribes. The original character of this city was that most of its residents worked in the countryside. These are the main industries in the lake town of Benin Island. They still rely heavily on fishing, but they are also becoming increasingly reliant on tourism.

Floating city africa houses are erected on wooden stakes, and the only building that will find on the mainland is the school and the one that houses the last resting place of the lake's inhabitants, the cemetery. The origin of this city dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. At that time, the Fon tribe used to search the villages for slaves to sell them to the Portuguese. This was Ganvier's darkest period when human trafficking was one of the most precious commodities in Africa.

Since then, they have built their houses on the waters of Lake Nokue, on wooden stakes. The Ganvie Benin villages are a set of small stilt houses or huts, with thatched or tin roofs and bamboo walls.

Ganvie, Benin, is home to some 20,000 people, who carry out most of their daily activities on their boats. They seemed to enjoy putting their feet on the ground. The children handled the boats with such skill that they surely learn to row rather than walk.

Lake Nokue Villages

The only way to get around and travel to other villages on Lake Nokué is by boat, which the inhabitants use. Life in the villages of Lake Nokoué revolves around the Ganvie lake village in Benin; not only do they live there, but it is also their main livelihood. The Tofuni who settled here went from being farmers to fishermen, and most of them now dedicate themselves to artisanal fishing. They use a network called Medokpokonou, shaped like a funnel.

Fishing boats are called "dugouts". The sails are made from old sacks and serve their purpose well for sailing on Lake Nokoue. The Oueme River and the So riNokouévers provide water for Lake Nokue. The water level rises during the rainy seasons from June through December. This encourages the growth of invasive water Hyacinths.

Lake Village West Nokoue is also at risk from climate change, just like the rest of the globe. The Gan Lake could grow to twice its current size if the rains become more intense. If such a scenario happens, agricultural lands around the lake would be inundated. It would be a disaster if someone sprayed pesticides into the water and fish.

Lake Nokoue's fragile ecosystem and insufficient resources to combat pollution could make it impossible for people to live there in the future. If we continue to dump tonnes of trash and other waste into the lake without any treatment, it will cause it to disappear.
